M3U and Xtream Codes are two ways to load your IPTV subscription into a player app. An M3U playlist is a link to a list of channels. An Xtream Codes login uses a server URL, username and password, and usually loads live TV, movies, series and the TV guide in neatly organized categories. If your app supports Xtream Codes, that is usually the easiest choice.

Document and key icons: comparing M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins

What is an M3U playlist?

M3U is a simple text format for playlists. Each channel has a line with its name and details, followed by the address of the stream. A shortened example looks like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.example" group-title="News",Example News HD
http://example.com/live/username/password/1234.ts

Your provider gives you a link to the full playlist, and the app reads it to build the channel list. Almost every IPTV player supports M3U, including VLC on a computer.

What is an Xtream Codes login?

Xtream Codes (often shown as “Xtream Codes API” or “XC login”) is a login method supported by many IPTV players. Instead of a single playlist link, you enter three details:

The app then loads live channels, movies and series in separate sections, together with the TV guide.

M3U vs. Xtream Codes compared

M3U playlist Xtream Codes
What you enter One playlist link Server URL, username, password
App support Almost every player Most dedicated IPTV players
TV guide Sometimes needs a separate EPG link Usually loads automatically
Movies and series Mixed into one long list Separate, organized sections
Loading large lists Can be slower Usually faster

Which one should you use?

Both methods use the same subscription. IPVario sends both sets of details in your welcome email, so you can pick whichever your app supports. See the setup guides for Smart TVs, the Fire TV Stick and Android TV and Google TV.

Keep your login details safe

An M3U link usually contains your username and password in the address itself. Treat it like a password:

Common login errors

“Invalid server” or nothing loads

Check the server URL: it must include http:// (or https://) and the port number if your email lists one.

“Invalid username or password”

Login details are case-sensitive, and an extra space at the end is a common cause. Copy and paste them where possible.

“Max connections reached”

Your plan allows a set number of screens at once. Close the app on another device, or choose a multi-screen plan. More fixes are in our troubleshooting guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use M3U and Xtream Codes at the same time?

They are two ways into the same subscription. Using both on different devices at the same time counts as two screens.

Is an M3U file different from an M3U link?

The content is the same. A link always loads the latest version of the playlist, so it is the better choice for live TV.
